Never has there been a more aptly named car than the Mini. As Paddy Hopkirk, who won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini Cooper S, once noted, “A small road looks like a big road to a Mini.” Despite its diminutive size, the Mini looms large in automotive history. It redefined spacial efficiency - they are surprisingly roomy inside - and proved front wheel drive could be fun. Lots and lots of fun. The Mini was the original hot hatchback, combining small size, excellent fuel economy and sporty driving dynamics some 20 years before the Volkswagen GTi came along. The Mini also has proven remarkably adaptable. There are diesel Minis, sporting Minis and even electric Minis. And now, to mark the icon’s 50th anniversary, there’s a Mini coupe.

It’s confirmed that at least one two-door Mini concept will be displayed at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month. Mini has two concepts in the works - a two-passenger coupe and an open-top speedster - but it is unknown which model will debut first. Both concepts are said to be based on Mini’s R57 platform. Incidentally, the production version of the Mini crossover will also debut in Frankfurt. It’s speculated that the company may bring along a two-seat concept to give the impression that a Mini is still all about having fun behind the wheel. What we can be sure of is that the Mini variant that will show up would have the same potent but fuel-efficient drivetrains as the current models. Given the small size of a two-passenger Mini, the eventual production version could become the performance benchmark for the entire lineup.
