fiat-expanding-twinair-range-22558_1.jpg

Fiat is planning to move forward on the downsizing route, as the company wants to spread the use of the new two-cylinder 900 cc turbocharged TwinAir engine.

The Italian company will offer the powerplant in three levels of power and will also install it in a wider list of models (the unit is currently only available for the 500 model).

The model will make its debut with the 84 hp version which will be introduced on the 500 in September. The unit offers similar performance with the four cylinder 1.4-liter naturally aspirated engine already available on the 500, but comes with a 30 percent fuel consumption and emissions reduction. yoshikawa-to-replace-rossi-in-yamaha-lineup-21701_1

Although initially deciding to continue their current MotoGP campaign with a single rider, in the person of Jorge Lorenzo, FIAT Yamaha Team now confirmed that they will substitute injured Valentino Rossi with their test rider Wataru Yoshikawa for at least 3 races.

Rossi was badly injured during the practice session of the Italian GP at Mugello and, after he underwent operation in a Florence hospital, the doctors decided he should be sidelined for at least 2 months. Shortly after, Yamaha said that they will not rush into naming a replacement for the 7-time MotoGP champion. Read the rest of this entry »

Alfa Romeo SUV

alfaromeosuvrendering

According to the Fiat Group’s company plan, Alfa Romeo will introduce its first SUV ever in 2012, splashing out into a segment it has never previously entered. The Alfa SUV will be a compact model and will be based on the Alfa Giulietta compact platform, while assembly operations are likely to take place in a US Chrysler plant. The Alfa SUV will be mostly destined for the US market, but it should also appear in Europe to boost Alfa sales on its home continent.

To make an impact in the saturated SUV market that is the US, the Alfa Romeo SUV will have to be one sexy little well-priced offering. It will be about 450 cm long and at least 180 wide, therefore placing itself, in terms of size, between the BMW X1 and X3, and between the Audi Q3 and Q5. The Alfa C-SUV will have both petrol and diesel engine options, mostly with four cylinders, combined with all-wheel drive which will be developed with Jeep.

With the new C-Evo Platform there will be more crossover between Jeep and Alfa models, with the new Patriot and Compass models being based on the Alfa platform. They will debut in 2013 and will share quite a few components with the new Alfa SUV, while in 2014 we should see another Alfa SUV developed, known only at this stage as the D-SUV.

Fiat Uno Ecology Concept

fiat-uno-ecology-concept-revealed-20174_1.jpg

Fiat has unveiled a concept study of the new Fiat Uno, called the “Uno Ecology”, just days after the official presentation of its new supermini in Brazil. As its name suggests, the Uno Ecology is a green car that uses renewable materials, has reduced emissions and improved fuel economy.

Fiat hasn’t released all the details about this car yet, but it is known that the Uno Ecology uses a modified version of the standard car’s 1.0-liter flex-fuel gasoline engine, equipped with Fiat’s stop-start technology.

Fiat Uno Ecology has photo-voltaic cells on the roof that use solar light to power various systems of the car. On the inside, various renewable and recyclable materials are used: coconut fibers and recyclet PET are just two examples. The car was 100 percent conceived and built in Brazil, using Brazilian materials, workforce and technology.

Entry-Level Models From Maserati

maserati-to-introduce-two-new-entry-level-models-19549_1

Maserati will add new cheaper models to its range in the next five years, according to Fiat’s five-year business plan announced yesterday in Turin, Italy.

The sport brand will build two new premium models priced between EUR55,000 and EUR70,000 ($73,640 to $93,730). Currently, the lowest priced Maserati is the GranTurismo, which retails in Europe at around EUR112,000 ($150,000). The reason for extending the Maserati range downward is to exploit the brand’s DNA, according to Fiat Group CEO, Sergio Marchionne.

He did not provide more details on when the new models would arrive, but said the two new cheaper models will be part of the high-end E segment. The target price that Marchionne mentioned for the new Maseratis would be close to what BMW is charging for the new BMW 5-series Gran Turismo.

Maserati And Alfa Romeo Use Same Platform

maserati-to-share-future-platform-with-alfa-romeo-18040_1.jpg

Platform sharing is a commonly used concept in the automotive industry, one that offers multiple advantages, such as a lower price for some models, or a technology infusion for brands that would have otherwise been left behind in terms of engineering progress.

But there are a few high-end segments of the market, where platform sharing can be dangerous, as it may affect both the donor and the receiver in terms of image. The Fiat group is stepping further on this dangerous ground, by planing to create a new platform that will underpin future Maserati and Alfa Romeo models, as InsideLine reports.

Chrysler’s New Engine

chrysler-s-new-engine-line-up-15214_2.jpg

Having partnered, forced by the circumstances, with Italian manufacturer Fiat last year, American manufacturer Chrysler saw itself forced to rethink its powertrain strategy and, in places, reverse it completely from how it looked prior to its bankruptcy.

In the eve of the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Chrysler reminded us its new approach in terms of powerplants. The stars of the new direction are, as announced ever since late 2009, the Fiat-sourced FIRE MultiAir engines.

Chrysler Group will attain leadership by rapidly applying Fiat Powertrain technologies, such as Multiair, direct injection, turbocharging and transmission systems to its powertrain portfolio,” Paolo Ferrero, Senior Vice President, Chrysler Powertrain said in a release. “By 2014 calendar year, more than 80 percent of Chrysler Group’s current powertrain lineup will undergo a complete makeover.

chrysler-presents-fiats-14-fire-multiair-engine-14653_1.jpg

The fruits of this summer’s Fiat - Chrysler deal are now ripe and they can be harvested. The American side announced today it will introduce Fiat’s 1.4l in-line four-cylinder Fully Integrated Robitized Engine (FIRE) with Multiair technology in the 2010 Fiat 500 which will be sold in the US.

The engine features four valves per cylinder and Fully Variable Valve Actuation (FVVA), known to Fiat’s fans as Multiair. The technology allows the engine to provide 10 percent more power, while at the same time keeping fuel consumption and emissions 10 percent down compared with a regular engine.
