New F1 Safety Car Rules

f1-safety-car-rules-changed-22245_1.jpg

The safety car rules in Formula One have finally been changed, as a result of Ferrari’s outburst at the fiasco in Valencia. All the 12 F1 teams met with FIA’s race director Charlie Whiting on Thursday to discuss a tweak in regulations regarding drivers’ behavior under safety car and a quicker response from the FIA officials when penalties are applied.

Ferrari’s and Fernando Alonso’s complaints after the European Grand Prix were that the latter respected the safety car rules and did not overtake the Bernd Maylander-driven Mercedes gullwing, while Lewis Hamilton did the opposite and went on to finish 2nd. That was a consequence of the FIA stewards’ slow thinking after Mark Webber’s crash, as they handed Hamilton the penalty 20 minutes later. It eventually had no effect whatsoever on his overall position at the finish line.

From now on however, while the safety car rules remain effectively the same, it has been agreed that drivers who are not being slowed by the safety car will have to drive on track at the same speed as the Mercedes gullwing. What that means is that all the drivers on the track will be forced to drive with the same speed, no matter if behind or ahead of the SC.

Tire Degradation in Malaysia

bridgestone-predicts-high-tire-degradation-in-malaysia-18652_1.jpg

Only a few days after the exciting Australian Grand Prix, the teams are now preparing for the upcoming race in Malaysia, scheduled to take place this very weekend. And, according to F1 tire manufacturer Bridgestone, the teams should prepare for some entirely different conditions at the Sepang circuit, which will affect the tires far more as compared to the first couple of races in 2010.

Of course, this will happen in case the weather in Malaysia will be as hot as usual. Past experiences have taught the F1 teams to expect anything at Sepang, especially considering last year’s rain-affected and red-flagged action on Sunday.

CNN as long-time sponsors of the Malaysian

lotus-f1-signs-long-time-deal-with-cnn-17478_1.jpg

They may not have bagged countrymen Petronas oil company as major sponsor of their Formula One operations, but Lotus F1 Team sure managed to hit the jackpot earlier this week, as they have confirmed world’s leading news network CNN as long-time sponsors of the Malaysian backed outfit.

Although not title sponsors, CNN agreed to a long-time partnership with Lotus, with its logos due to appear heavily on the surface of the T127, as well as the drivers’ overalls and all team clothing.

We are very proud to welcome CNN into the Lotus Racing family. It is a sign of the positive impact we have already made in the global business market that such a prestigious brand, familiar to millions around the world as the definitive source of news and current affairs, has made the decision to partner with us,” said the team’s CEO Tony Fernandes.

Team Building from Trulli

trulli-wants-to-build-race-winning-lotus-team-17275_1.jpg

Although Lotus F1 Team confirmed they are aiming to become the best newly-entered team of Formula One during the 2010 season, their experienced driver Jarno Trulli insisted that the upcoming campaign will be one of constructing a string outfit for the future.

The Malaysian-backed team signed two race-winning drivers for their returning F1 campaign in 2010, this being proof enough of the team’s plans for the future.

We have to be realistic. It’s going to be a tough season, and to begin with what we need to do is be reasonably competitive. Eventually, the target will probably be to show some good performances by the end of the year. As I say, it’s a long-term project, and the first season is all about building up the team,” said Trulli.

Pedro de la Rosa With Sauber

sauber-sign-pedro-de-la-rosa-for-the-2010-season-15600_1.jpg

No, it won’t be Giancarlo Fisichella the driver to join Kamui Kobayashi in the 2010 starting lineup of Sauber F1 Team, but another Formula One veteran, namely Pedro de la Rosa. Although recent reports have suggested that the Spaniard is set to test McLaren’s MP4-25 car during the first day of the Valencia test (on February 1st), Sauber today confirmed the Spaniard will drive for his team through the 2010 campaign.

Pedro has spent many years working for a top team at the highest technical level. We as a team stand to gain from his experience, and the same goes for young Kamui,” said Sauber, according to the team’s latest press release.

The combination of a seasoned racer and an up-and-coming young driver has repeatedly proved a very fruitful one. I don’t expect either of them to disappoint in 2010.”

F1 May Not Sustainable

859.2.jpg

Ex-Formula One boss David Richards has said large levels of expenditure on irrelevant technologies in F1 could lead to the sport’s demise.

Richards recently made a bid to buy into the Renault F1 team with his motorsport engineering company Prodrive. However, the French manufacturer turned down his offer in favour of one made by investment company Genii Capital. Having seriously considered buying an F1 team, Richards now believes the sport needs to change dramatically if it wants to survive.

“The last year has made me have a very careful think about our business and there were times during those 12 months that I had to seriously question the role of motorsport,” he told The People.

Tony Fernandes have Stewardess Job at Virgin

branson-offers-tony-fernandes-stewardess-job-at-virgin-14559_1

It’s quite obvious that all the new teams that are to make their first steps in Formula One next season will have at least one thing in their mind. And that’s to become the best of the newly-entrants. Some of them have said it out loud - see Campos Grand Prix or Lotus F1 Team - some have joked about it - Virgin Racing - and others have tried to keep a low profile - US F1.

Referring to the joking part, it couldn’t have come from any other F1 boss than Sir Richard Branson. The Virgin Group owner responded in humorist fashion to Lotus F1’s CEO Tony Fernandes, who recently told the media that he’ll likely kill himself if he won’t finish the 2010 season ahead of Virgin Racing.

Branson, however, found another challenge for the two organizations for the upcoming season. Needless to say, it’s less painful and provides some good job opportunities for the loser of this who-finishes-in-front bet.

Peter Sauber Buys BMW F1 Team?

bmw-sells-f1-team-to-peter-sauber-13821_1.jpg

German manufacturer BMW has finally reached a definitive agreement regarding the selling of their F1 operations. Just like in the case of Honda one year ago, the German officials decided to proceed to some kind of a management buyout and sold all the 80 percent of their shares in the Hinwil based team to former co-owner Peter Sauber.

Although the buyout of their F1 operations was initially agreed upon with Swiss investment company Qadbak, BMW decided to sell it to Sauber instead because of the suspicious character of Qadback owner, convicted fraudster Russell King. However, the BMW/Sauber deal is “subject to the condition that the team has a starting place for the 2010 Formula 1 season.”

We are very happy with this solution. This fulfils the most important requirement for a successful future for the team. Our relationship with Peter Sauber has always been excellent and marked by absolute respect. We would like to express our thanks to Peter Sauber and the whole team for the excellent cooperation during the recent four years,” said Dr Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

Lotus “BOLEH” (Can)

lotus-confirms-lokkout-for-sponsors-13230_1.jpg

Although the two Malaysian companies Tune Group and Naza Group have secured the financial scheme for the Lotus F1 Team for the 2010 Formula One Championship - approximately 55 million euros - that isn’t to mean the Norfolk based team is not looking for more sponsorship money in order to become successful next year.

As all Formula One fans probably know by now, having a big budget throughout the season is decisive in the team’s strategy to keep the pace with the latest aerodynamic developments in the series. No car has ever finished the championship having the same aerodynamic devices as when in the first race, because the teams would constantly develop updates to improve throughout the season.  Read the rest of this entry »

We are not going to add anything more -Lotus

2b486b8e38ed928502a009b.jpg

Lotus F1 Team distanced itself from what could become the new espionage scandal in Formula One, as the Malaysian team insisted the wind tunnel dilemma is something that regards only Force India and their former operator.

As showed in a report last week, the Indian outfit feared that the Lotus F1 Team wind tunnel model - which they disclosed pictures of last month - was a copy of their own for the 2010 season. The fears grew bigger as it emerged that Force India’s former wind tunnel operator Aerolab was contracted by Lotus F1 Team for the development of their 2010 challenger.

In the meantime, Force India and the Italian company parted ways, but it seemed that the Indian outfit had forgotten one of their wind tunnel models at the Aerolab facility where Lotus was to develop their own machinery. Shortly after these allegations started to make the headlines, Aerolab hit back by threatening to sue Vijay Mallya’s team for “breach of contract”.
