Light Car - Open Source

After the interest it stirred last year with its “Light Car - Open Source” concept, EDAG is back at the Geneva Auto Show with an improved version of its independent design concept for the electric-powered car of the future.

In the words of Jörg Ohlsen Spokesman of the Executive Board of the EDAG Group, “the electric drive system offers designers and developers huge potential for the realisation of truly novel vehicle concepts, to provide the consumer with an unmistakable type of vehicle, namely electric cars.”

Kia Venga Electric

2010-geneva-auto-show-kia-venga-electric-17535_1.jpeg

Although the 2010 Geneva Auto Show is dominated by world premieres of Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche or Lexus, there are several other vehicles that deserve a closer look into its offering. Such an example is the electric Kia Venga, an all-electric plug-in concept car based on the newly-released Venga.

Just as its name suggests, the electric concept is identical to the regular Venga but, instead of a combustion engine, it employs an electric motor that develops 80 kW (107 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 280 Nm. Translate this into performance figures and you get a 0 - 100 acceleration in 11.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 87 mph (140 km/h).

Power comes from a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery that provides a maximum range of 112 miles (180 km) per charge. The quick recharging mode allows to restore 80 percent of the battery in 20 minutes, while under a normal mode, the battery is fully restored in 8 hours. The battery is located under the boot floor, while the electric powertrain is placed under the hood, just like a regular combustion unit.

Kia hasn’t mentioned whether it really intends to push the electric Venga into production but, given that fact that this represents the first all-electric plug-in model, it probably has some chances to be mass-produced. However, in case such a scenario becomes reality, a two to three years timeframe to see the production version is very possible.

Protoscar LAMPO2

protoscar-lampo2-details-16413_1.jpg

The Swiss company Protoscar continues to tease us with a set of pictures and a video of its upcoming LAMPO2 electric sports car, which will be unveiled next month at the Geneva Motor Show. This feels like 2009 all over again, as the same marketing strategy was used for the introduction of the original LAMPO at last year’s Geneva Auto Show.

The LAMPO2 is underpinned by GM’s Kappa platform, which can usually be found under the Opel GT, Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky - the car has decided to keep the cabrio theme. As you can see, this is wrapped in a pretty unconventional body. Actually we think the correct term would be “odd”.

Renault’s Zoe Z.E. electric and Spa car

20607_hd__371a36be.jpg

If there’s anything the French hate more than gas-guzzling Family Trucksters, it’s bad skin. It is therefore with much amusement but little surprise that we learned the interior Renault’s Zoe Z.E. electric car concept was designed with help from cosmetics manufacturer Biotherm.

Hinting at a production vehicle that officially debuts in 2012, we first saw the Zoe Z.E. at the Frankfurt auto show earlier this year. It’s hard to miss, since it’s a 13-foot-long bubble with 20-inch rims and gullwing doors. That exterior is coated in a thick polyurethane gel that protects it from minor scrapes and bruises - much like a good foundation masks crow’s feet and laugh lines.

Renault says the Zoe is ideal “for men and women who want to take care of the environment while taking care of themselves - even behind the wheel.” Since unsightly blemishes and wrinkles are as much an anathema to French sensibilities as Velveeta and Wonderbread, the automaker made the interior a spa-like experience.

Electric cars can’t be fast? [VIDEO Inside]

electric-car-charge-plug.jpg

An oldie, but goodie…our friend Doug sent us a video that was released late last year and which reveals the power that could come out of an electric car. How is this relevant to BMW vehicles? Well, it shows that electric vehicles have a future and what John Whelen has experienced behind his 1972 electric Datsun…we did too, back at the L.A Auto Show in 2008 when we drove the MINI E. That torque that comes from 0 rpm is just impressive…

Also, at one point in the video, an E46 BMW M3 takes on the electric Datsun at a race track…..the result? See for yourself! Read the rest of this entry »

E-Tron, Audi’s eco-friendly supercar concept

audi-e-tron.jpg

Apparently, electric cars aren’t such a bad idea after all. Just days after Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen proclaimed that diesels were the future in lieu of electrons, Audi’s own electric supercar concept will be officially debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show. While we’re anxiously awaiting Audi’s scheduled press conference, a slew of renderings managed to make their way to the internet this morning that show some of the car’s interesting visual details.
