Audi’s turbocharged 2.5 liter TSI engine has received the “International Engine of the Year” in the 2 liter to 2.5 liter category. The five cylinder 2,480 cmc unit, which has been introduced on the Audi TT-RS, uses turbocharging and FSI direct gasoline injection to develop 340 hp between 5,400 rpm and 6,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 450 Nm from 1,600 rpm to 5,300 rpm.

The powerplant returns a combined cycle fuel consumption of 25.5 mpg (9.2 liters per 100 km) and emits 214 grams of CO2 per km. The light unit tips the scales at 183 kg, allowing the TT-RS to keep a low overall weight, as well as offering advantages for the distribution of axle loads. Read the rest of this entry »

Hyundai, Carmaker of the Year Award

hyundai-gets-carmaker-of-the-year-awar-17108_1.jpg

Hyundai must be really enjoying its position right now. The Korean manufacturer increased its sales worldwide, increased its market share and managed to get some awards along the way.

The joy ride continues, as the automaker was named Carmaker of the Year by AM Magazine from the UK. The jury led by AM Editor Jeremy Bennett awarded Hyundai despite serious competition like Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar or Kia. The ceremony was held in Birmingham.

Jeremy said: “With the newly-opened factory in Eastern Europe pumping out high quality vehicles and dealers selling them at the right price to a consumer base looking for alternative motoring choices, it was only a matter of time before Hyundai entered the mainstream”. Audi Won Most Improved Brand Loyalty

audi_100183867_s.jpg

The battle to win–and keep–hearts and minds is fiercer than ever in the current low-volume U.S. luxury market. Audi made major strides this year, gaining market share and losing the least of the major luxury carmakers. And on top of that, it earned R.L. Polk’s award for the “most improved brand loyalty” in the industry.

Audi saw its brand loyalty, measured as the amount of repeat customers, grow by 4.9 percent in 2009. That’s enough to beat the improvement of not just every luxury brand, but every carmaker in the U.S. The overall brand loyalty title went to Toyota, topping GM for the first time in nine years.

BMW, The Greenest Manufacturer

audi-wins-greenest-manufacturer-award-15243_1.jpg

Whoever said that automakers need to go hybrid in order to get greener was dead wrong. The proof is right here: BMW Group, who’s line up does not include a hybrid car, was awarded the “Greenest Manufacturer of the Year Award” by UK’s Green-Car-Guide.com.

BMW was awarded as it had the biggest impact on lowering CO2 emission in the United Kingdom throughout the course of the last year.

“In keeping with Green-Car-Guide’s core philosophy, the focus of our Award is on best-in-class low emission cars, but the cars should also be great to drive, so the BMW Group offers an ideal range of vehicles to meet the criteria of the award,” said Paul Clarke, Founder and Managing Editor of Green-Car-Guide.com.

No “Sportsman of 2009″ Award For Vettel

vettel-loses-german-sportsman-of-2009-award-14741_1.jpg

Sebastian Vettel failed to win the Germany’s “Sportlern des Jahres 2009″ award this year (Sportsman of the Year 2009), as he only came second in the voting process last weekend. The awarding gala took place at Baden-Baden during the course of last weekend, with more than 750 guests attending the event.

Even though the 22-year old German driver came close to becoming world Formula One champion in 2009 - he was 11 points short of doing so and therefore unable to hand Germany its first F1 trophy in the post-Schumacher era - Vettel’s performance was no match to professional swimmer Paul Biedermann’s in 2009.

Biedermann did the unimaginable during the course of the 2009 season and broke Ian Thorpe’s record in the 400m freestyle, which the Australian ace had set back in 2002. In addition to that record, the German swimmer also set another world record of his own, in the 200m event.

Jaguar XF, Women’s World Car of the Year

jaguar-xf-is-the-historys-first-womans-world-car-of-the-year-14391_1.jpg

Jaguar XF has won the first Women’s World Car of the Year, a title awarded by an international group of 8 female motoring journalists. They conceived this award in November 2008 as a response to the fact that the judging panel in charge of the 2007 U.S. Car Of the Year Award was an exclusively masculine staff.

“We searched for quite a while to gather together women motoring writers who could qualify to vote for this award and it wasn’t easy because female motor journalists aren’t exactly thick on the ground,” chief judge, New Zealander Sandy Myhre, declared.

A group of 21 vehicles have been tested over the past year. The automobiles have been judged by some rather unconventional criteria, as far as male automotive journalists are concerned: child-friendliness, sex appeal, ease of driving , safety, color and value for money.

Two Top Gear Awards For Skoda

skoda-gets-two-top-gear-awards-14379_1.jpg

Skoda seems to be moving up in the world - from the image standpoint - as two of its models were awarded by Top Gear, one of the most important auto publications in the world. The Skoda Superb managed to get the “Luxury Car of the Year” award, while Yeti was named “Family Car of the Year.”

While the Czechs were probably out celebrating their success, Conor McNicholas, the magazine’s editor explained why the Yeti has won: “The Yeti has been an instant hit with the Top Gear magazine office,” he said.

We love the styling, the handling, the quality, the space, the clever touches and yes, the name. If you’re looking for a family car it should be top of your list to check out, simple as that. The Yeti feels like part of the Top Gear family.
