Never has there been a more aptly named car than the Mini. As Paddy Hopkirk, who won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini Cooper S, once noted, “A small road looks like a big road to a Mini.” Despite its diminutive size, the Mini looms large in automotive history. It redefined spacial efficiency - they are surprisingly roomy inside - and proved front wheel drive could be fun. Lots and lots of fun. The Mini was the original hot hatchback, combining small size, excellent fuel economy and sporty driving dynamics some 20 years before the Volkswagen GTi came along. The Mini also has proven remarkably adaptable. There are diesel Minis, sporting Minis and even electric Minis. And now, to mark the icon’s 50th anniversary, there’s a Mini coupe.

It’s confirmed that at least one two-door Mini concept will be displayed at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month. Mini has two concepts in the works - a two-passenger coupe and an open-top speedster - but it is unknown which model will debut first. Both concepts are said to be based on Mini’s R57 platform. Incidentally, the production version of the Mini crossover will also debut in Frankfurt. It’s speculated that the company may bring along a two-seat concept to give the impression that a Mini is still all about having fun behind the wheel. What we can be sure of is that the Mini variant that will show up would have the same potent but fuel-efficient drivetrains as the current models. Given the small size of a two-passenger Mini, the eventual production version could become the performance benchmark for the entire lineup.

Watching this spot for the MINI Cooper S that was created by agency Butler, Shine, Stern and Partners, the first thing that came to mind was Stephen King’s horror novels. The witty commercial tries to show off the crisp and go-kart-like handling of the MINI Cooper S as the driver of the car evades an army of “evil” shopping carts with minds of their own that keep attacking him in a super-market parking lot.

The now famous BMW/MINI rumormill is buzzing with word that a MINI Performance Crossover for the enthusiasts crowd is being considered for development. While we’re still waiting for the official launch of the “regular” Crossover, MINI continues to plan an extension of their current line-up by introducing vehicles that would target a new demographic.
We’ve already learned that a MINI Speedster and a Progressive Activity MINI - Spacebox- are being developed with a delivery date set in the next two years. With so many new models launching in the near future, one cannot stop to wonder if MINI is overreaching and expanding into new areas that could diminish the brand and upset the crowds.
“After the initial probation period of the upcoming MINI Crossover , BMW will expand the Crossover’s portfolio to introduce a MINI Crossover for enthusiasts. Known internally as the “Porsche Cayenne Turbo” of MINI it will be separated from the initial versions including the JCW.

Just for a little Mini fun today, here’s one Mini birthday video in which the small car is described as “having a million friends”, “one bad ass little car”, and “doing things which no other car could do”. Apparently “it’s like first love” and one girl even says “I’m totally convinced my Mini has a soul”.

MINI’s Crossover “SUV like vehicle” was recently spied testing in the desert by our friend Rich over at Automotivetraveler.com.
MINI is looking to capitalize on their MINI vehicles with an all new model that will
From Rich at Automotivetraveler.com:
“The first thing that apparent when looking at the near-production-spec MINI 4X4 is the thicker body section, from the rocker panels to the window line that while unmistakably MINI, is much more butch than the non-4X4 versions. Clearly BMW’s designers wanted to make a statement that the form and function of their first crossover would separate it from its expected rivals in the small, soft-roader segment populated by the like of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, and Jeep’s own Patriot, probably the most off-road capable vehicle in the category.” (gallery after the jump)
