Direct-Injected And Turbocharged GTDi Engine

volvo-2-0-liter-gtdi-engine_100304871_m.jpg

Volvo has unveiled the first of a new range of down-sized gasoline engines that the automaker plans to launch in its cars from this year onwards. The new engines adopt the tried-and-tested method of combining two separate fuel saving technologies, direct fuel injection and turbocharging, in order to make an engine more efficient.

Volvo calls its technology Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDi) and it will debut in the Volvo S80 sedan in overseas markets and eventually filter across to the V70 and XC60 models. No word yet on any U.S. release but there’s a strong chance that the upcoming 2010 Volvo S60 due later in the year will feature a GTDi engine.

As for the unit debuting in the S80, it features a four-valve four-cylinder design and displaces 2.0-liters. Peak output stands at 203 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque–similar numbers to Volvo’s current 2.5-liter engines. Additionally, an overboost function squeezes an extra 15 pound-feet of torque when needed.

Volvo’s new GTDi engine also utilizes variable timing for its camshafts. Both the inlet and the exhaust valves’ opening times can be varied to optimize the overlap and ensure the correct fill rate in the combustion chamber irrespective of engine revs. This gives the combustion process maximum efficiency throughout the rev range and helps generate rapid acceleration at all speeds.

Know The Noise From Your Car

how-to-understand-car-noises-16067_2

We are pretty sure there is no single driver out there who hasn’t experienced, at one point in his driving career, strange or eerie noises coming from the car. Regardless of the type of noise, a sudden screech, knock, rattle or whistle is enough to send the driver into a not so pleasant state: What happened? What’s wrong? Will my car be OK?

If the noise will not eventually result in a deadly failure for the car, the driver will likely tend to ignore it, especially because strange noises have a tendency to come and go as they please, often missing for days before reappearing again.

Yet the fact that an unnatural noise occurred is a definite signal that something is wrong with the car and you should have it looked at. If you like, a strange noise is the way in which the car communicates a fault which is not monitored by its electronic systems.

There are countless types of noises, signaling countless more or less serious problems. We will try here to highlight the ones which occur the most, but feel free to describe your experience in the comment box below and ask for advice should your car noise is not be listed here.

DTM 2010 Calendar

dtm-announces-2010-calendar-will-end-in-shanghai-16009_1.jpg

The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) today confirmed their calendar for the 2010 season, and the first news is the the German series will not discover its champion on European soil, but in Asia. According to the press release from DTM, Shanghai was chosen to host the 2010 season finale in the championship.

Although several discussions regarding the inclusion of the Chinese circuit inside the DTM schedule took place in recent months, no one was really sure whether the German officials were able to develop a DTM round in time for the 2010 season. The need for an Asian event was developed soon after French circuit Dijon asked to cancel their ongoing contract with the series.

Dijon’s stay in the series proved to be short-lived, as the French circuit replaced the more famous Le Mans venue as of last year.

Technical Specifications For Ferrari F10

ferrari-f10-technical-specifications-16001_1

A couple of hours ago, Ferrari Formula One Team unveiled the first pictures of their 2010 challenger on their official website. This was practically the first team in F1 to show real pictures of their new car to their fans, as Mercedes GP’s launch earlier this week included only their new livery, painted on their 2009 machine.

That being said, Ferrari also disclosed the technical specifications of their new car. While the car obviously benefits from some new aerodynamic cues as compared to its F60 predecessor, the majority of the technical specifications have remained the same.

However, two changes are quite visible. Obviously, due to the refueling ban introduced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for the 2010 season, the new Ferrari F10 features a larger fuel tank. Ferrari is yet to reveal the exact dimensions of its new fuel tank, but it’s quite clear it is larger as compared to 2009, as it needs to “accommodate” more fuel during the 2010 races.

Schumacher Could Race Longer

schumacher-could-race-in-f1-from-2013-onwards-15982_1.jpg

Michael Schumacher has agreed to a 3-year deal with Mercedes GP, when finally deciding to return to Formula One racing. While insisting that he came back to win an 8th title in the series, the 41-year old German did admit that he may have to wait for a year or so to make it to the F1 crown.

Additionally, Schuey revealed that he may race some more in the Great Circus, meaning he may not stop at the end of 2012. By that date, the German ace would be 43, but he argued that this has nothing to do with his ability to race F1 cars. If he’ll still have fun with it, its’ likely that he’ll continue to drive for Mercedes.

The good thing is that Mercedes believes in me and is giving me the chance for three years to have success. But it does not mean it has to end after three years,” Schumacher was quoted as saying to the German newspaper Bild.
